Synthesis, Characterization and Two-Photon Absorption Properties of a Novel Pyridinium Salt

A novel pyridinium salt, 2,4-bis[p-(N,N-dimethylamino)styryll-N-metlayl pyridinium iodide (BMSPI) was synthesized and characterized by TG, ^1H NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis, and the reaction process was studied by using ES-MS. When BMSPI was pumped by a pulsed 1064 nm, 50 ps laser beam, it manifests highly efficient TPA (Two-Photon Absorption) and up-conversion superradiance. The up-conversion efficiency was 6.0% at the pump energy of 4-6 mJ and the lifetime of two-photon fluorescence was measured as 59 ps.     

Period-doubling and chaotic oscillations in the ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in a CSTR

The ferroin-catalyzed Belousov-Zhabotinsky(BZ) reaction,the oxidation of malonic acid by acidic bromate,is the most commonly investigated chemical system for understanding spatial pattern forma-tion. Various oscillatory behaviors were found from such as mixed-mode and simple period-doubling oscillations and chaos on both Pt electrode and Br-ISE at high flow rates to mixed-mode oscillations on Br-ISE only at low flow rates. The complex dynamic behaviors were qualitatively reproduced with a two-cycle coupling model proposed initially by Gy?rgyi and Field. This investigation offered a proper medium for studying pattern formation under complex temporal dynamics. In addition,it also shows that complex oscillations and chaos in the BZ reaction can be extended to other bromate-driven nonlinear reaction systems with different metal catalysts.

A zwitterion of 1,5‐bis­(2‐hydroxy­benzamido)‐3‐aza­pentane: a two‐dimensional hydrogen‐bonding network involving dimers

The title compound, 2‐{N‐[2‐(2‐hydroxy­benzamido)ethyl­ammonio­ethyl]amino­carbon­yl}phenolate, C₁₈H₂₁N₃O₄, crystallizes in a zwitterionic form as a result of inter­molecular proton transfer and possesses a negatively charged phenolate group and a protonated amino group. The 2‐hydroxy­benzamide and 2‐(amino­carbonyl)­phenolate moieties attached to the two ends of the C—C—N—C—C backbone adopt a cis conformation in relation to this backbone. All N‐ and O‐bound H atoms are involved in hydrogen‐bond formation; the zwitterions are first linked into head‐to‐tail dimers, which are further organized into a two‐dimensional network parallel to the crystallographic bc plane.     

A Novel Dinuclear Nickel(II) Complex with Three Bridges of Cl–, OAc– and (‐OCH2CH2O‐) Group of N,N, N′, N′‐Tetrakis(2‐benzimidazolyl methyl‐1, 4‐di‐ethylene amino) Glycol Ether

The novel dinuclear Ni²⁺ complex [Ni₂(μ‐Cl)(μ‐OAc) (EGTB)]·Cl·ClO₄·2CH₃OH, where EGTB is N, N, N′, N′‐tetrakis (2‐benzimidazolyl methyl‐1, 4‐di‐ethylene amino)glycol ether, crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 15.272(2), b = 14.768(2), c = 22.486(3) Å, V = 5071.4(12) ų, Z = 4, D_calc = 1.414 g cm^?3, and is bridged by triply bridging agents of a chloride ion, an acetate and an intra‐ligand (‐OCH₂CH₂O‐) group. The nickel coordination geometry is that of a slightly distorted octahedron with a NiN₃O₂Cl arrangement of the ligand donor atoms. The Ni–Cl distance is 2.361(2) Å, and two Ni–O distances are 1.996(5) and 2.279(6) Å. The three Ni–N distances are 2.033(7), 2.060(6), and 2.166(6) Å with the Ni–N bond trans to an ether oxygen the shortest, the Ni–N bond trans to an acetate oxygen the middle and the Ni–N bond trans to Cl the longest.

Thermal analysis study of the effect of molecular weight on constrained amorphous phase in poly(phenylene sulfide)

We report a thermal analysis study of the effect of molecular weight on the amorphous phase structure of poly(phenylene sulfide), PPS, crystallized at temperatures just above the glass transition temperature. Thermal properties of Fortron PPS, having viscosity average molecular weights of 30000 to 91000, were characterized using temperature modulated differential scanning calorimetry (MDSC). We find that while crystallinity varies little with molecular weight, the heat capacity increment at the glass transition decreases as molecular weight decreases. This leads to a smaller liquid-like amorphous phase, and a larger rigid amorphous fraction, in the lower molecular weight PPS. For all molecular weights, constrained fraction decreases as the scan rate decreases.This research is supported by the U. S. Army Research Office through contract DAAH04-96-1-0009. An unusual chain cadmium(II) coordination polymer: catena‐poly[[(2,2′‐bipyridyl‐κ2N,N′)cadmium(II)]‐di‐μ‐chlorido‐[(2,2′‐bipyridyl‐κ2N,N′)cadmium(II)]‐di‐μ‐thiocyanato‐κ2N:S;κ2S:N]

The title complex, [CdCl(NCS)(C₁₀H₈N₂)]_n, represents an unusual Cd^II coordination polymer constructed by two types of anionic bridges and 2,2′‐bipyridyl (bipy) terminal ligands. These two types of bridges are arranged around inversion centers. The distorted octahedral coordination of the Cd^II center is provided by two chloride ions, one N‐ and one S‐donor atom from two thiocyanate ions, and a pair of N atoms from the chelating bipy ligand. Interestingly, adjacent Cd^II ions are interconnected alternately by paired chloride [Cd...Cd = 3.916 (1) Å] and thiocyanate bridges [Cd...Cd = 5.936 (1) Å] to generate an infinite one‐dimensional coordination chain. Furthermore, weak interchain C—H...S interactions between the bipy components and thiocyanate ions lead to the formation of a layered supramolecular structure.     

Functionalized platinum(II) terpyridyl alkynyl complexes as colorimetric and luminescence pH sensors

A series of platinum(II) terpyridyl alkynyl complexes that have been derivatized with basic amino functionalities, [Pt(tpy)(C[triple bond]C-C6H4-NR2-4]X (X = OTf-, R = CH3 1, R = CH2CH2OCH3 2, R = H 3; X = Cl-, R = CH3 4, R = CH2CH2OCH3 5, R = H 6) (tpy = 2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine), have been synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical responses at various acid concentrations were studied. The abilities of the complexes to function as colorimetric and luminescence pH sensors were demonstrated with dramatic color changes and luminescence enhancement upon introduction of acid.     

Novel Photochemical Hydrolysis of o-Acetylphenylacetonitriles to Amides

Irradiation of o-acetylphenylacetonitriles 1a,b in methanol (lambda >280 nm) leads to essentially quantitative photohydrolysis with formation of the corresponding ketal amides 3a,b. The mechanism proposed for this novel reaction is supported by the qualitatively different photochemical behavior of 1c and by a labeling experiment with 1a-L that confirms transfer of the carbonyl oxygen atom of 1a to the amide oxygen atom of 3a.
